NATURE AND QUANTITY OR VALUE OF SUPPLIES OR SERVICES: This notice relates to
archaeological services for the N17 / N18 Gort to Tuam PPP scheme, already advertised on 12.3.2009 ( www.etenders.gov.ie Ref No
81225), that may be required in the event of termination of the Contract
already advertised. The purpose of Archaeological
Services is to mitigate the effects of the scheme on any archaeological
features or deposits that may exist within the boundaries of the scheme as
defined by the Compulsory Purchase Order published by Galway County Council
in December 2007. Archaeological services are divided into four main stages: Stage (i) Test Excavations and Surveys. Stage (i) Services consist of site-specific test excavations by
hand, test excavations in wetland, architectural heritage surveys, townland boundary surveys, topographical surveys, topsoil
stripping by machine near known or suspected monuments, testing by machine at
geophysical anomalies, a desk-based study and standard test excavation by
machine in all remaining areas where archaeological features may be found. Stage (ii)
Pre-Excavation Services. Stage (ii) Services
consist of pre-excavation preparatory work at Stage (iii) excavation sites,
including fencing and the establishment of site access, accommodation and
parking areas, further removal and management of topsoil to fully expose all
of the archaeological features and deposits forming the excavation site,
pre-excavation cleaning of archaeological features and deposits,
pre-excavation surveys and plans of archaeological features and deposits,
further test excavations by hand of selected archaeological features and
deposits to confirm their date, character, significance and extent, and the
production of method statements for Stage (iii) excavations. Stage (iii) Excavations.
Stage (iii) Services
consist of the full excavation and recording of any significant
archaeological features or deposits discovered at Stage (i),
thus achieving "preservation by record" as a mitigation of the
direct impacts of the scheme. Stage (iii) Services
also include the preliminary processing (include flotation, sieving, drying, labeling etc.) of all bulk soil samples to prepare them
for analysis and preliminary "first aid" for finds pending full
conservation treatment in consultation with the National Museum of Ireland. Stage (iv)
Post-Excavation Analyses, Reporting and Dissemination. Stage (iv) Services
consist of post-excavation analyses or conservation work arising from the
Stage (iii) excavations, the production of detailed illustrated technical
reports on this work, and corresponding dissemination products. Note: To register your
