The purpose of Archaeological Services is to mitigate the effects of the scheme on any archaeological features or deposits that may exist within the boundaries of the scheme as defined by the Compulsory Purchase Order published by Galway County Council in December 2007. Archaeological services are divided into four main stages:

Stage (i) Test Excavations and Surveys.

Stage (i) Services consist of site-specific test excavations by hand, test excavations in wetland, architectural heritage surveys, townland boundary surveys, topographical surveys, topsoil stripping by machine near known or suspected monuments, testing by machine at geophysical anomalies, a desk-based study and standard test excavation by machine in all remaining areas where archaeological features may be found.

Stage (ii) Pre-Excavation Services.

Stage (ii) Services consist of pre-excavation preparatory work at Stage (iii) excavation sites, including fencing and the establishment of site access, accommodation and parking areas, further removal and management of topsoil to fully expose all of the archaeological features and deposits forming the excavation site, pre-excavation cleaning of archaeological features and deposits, pre-excavation surveys and plans of archaeological features and deposits, further test excavations by hand of selected archaeological features and deposits to confirm their date, character, significance and extent, and the production of method statements for Stage (iii) excavations.

Stage (iii) Excavations.

Stage (iii) Services consist of the full excavation and recording of any significant archaeological features or deposits discovered at Stage (i), thus achieving "preservation by record" as a mitigation of the direct impacts of the scheme.

Stage (iii) Services also include the preliminary processing (include flotation, sieving, drying, labeling etc.) of all bulk soil samples to prepare them for analysis and preliminary "first aid" for finds pending full conservation treatment in consultation with the National Museum of Ireland.

Stage (iv) Post-Excavation Analyses, Reporting and Dissemination.

Stage (iv) Services consist of post-excavation analyses or conservation work arising from the Stage (iii) excavations, the production of detailed illustrated technical reports on this work, and corresponding dissemination products.
