OPERIS ANALYSIS KIT (OAK)

The OPERIS ANALYSIS KIT (OAK) consists of a suite of powerful tools that are designed to assist Excel 97, 2000, 2002 and 2003/XP users in the analysis and development of spreadsheet models. OAK effectively extends the capabilities of Excel for users of complex spreadsheets, with the aim to more easily identify errors and encourage clarity and consistency during the model development process.

The software is easy to use and features a comprehensive User Manual and built-in Help section.

Please click here to read an article mentioning the use of OAK, that appeared in 'Compliance Week' magazine, published in the USA.

The Analysis tools allow you to:

The Development tools make it easy to:

  • graphically map the structure of a model
  • find formulae that break best practice rules
  • reconstruct formulae to list their precedents
  • identify all cells that are not used in calculation
  • rank the model formulae in order of complexity
  • locate formulae that are sources of error values
  • generate a database of all range names used in a model
  • compile a meaningful summary report on the composition of a model
  • see exactly how one model differs from another by comparing different versions of a model or worksheet;
  • search for spreadsheet features that cause error values or violate the principles of good modelling practice.
  • modify existing names to correct misspellings
  • define local names
  • re-produce formulae based on best practice principles
  • apply multiple range names at a time
  • delete multiple names at a time
  • insert or delete rows and columns through arrays
  • instantly replace range names with cell references within formulae of an entire worksheet.

Operis has a rolling programme of FREE updates to OAK which are intended to deliver improvements to the package at roughly 3-4 month intervals. Provided you hold a Version 3 software license, these releases are FREE.

Successive releases are numbered 3.20, 3.30 etc and the same user manual will apply to all of them. We will make available these upgrades on the OAK webpage as part of the upgrade to Version 3. It should be noted that a licence key that activates one of these versions of OAK on a workstation will continue to function for all the other releases.

The price of an OAK license is £395 (+VAT), with discounts provided on multiple licenses.

The price to upgrade to Version 3 from any earlier version of OAK is £89 (+VAT).

To acquire a license, you can fax a completed order form found here to our fax number of +44 (0)20 7562 0450.

Operis also enables the purchase of a site license for the software. To enquire about this or discounts on multiple licence or upgrade orders, please contact Simon Williams via email or on +44 (0)20 7562 0484.

Previous releases

March 2007 - Version 3.5

Insert / Delete Rows & Insert / Delete Columns: The code for this tool has been re-written in the newer C# language, resulting in a far quicker process time to perform this function.

Bug Fixes: With the increasing complexity of Excel spreadsheets, a number of fixes have been made to better handle larger spreadsheets.

October 2006 - Version 3.4

Search Tools: The code for this tool has been re-written in the newer C# language, resulting in a far quicker time to perform the cell content searches as required.

Questionnaire weblink- We love receiving feedback about the software, and have therefore enabled a weblink that can be used to provide such information. Be it an idea for a new OAK tool, a problem you are experiencing in using OAK or the contact details of someone you feel would benefit by using OAK, your feedback is welcome. This link can be found towards the bottom of the OAK dropdown menu within Excel.

Financial Modelling Book - A brochure for Jonathan Swan's popular book 'Practical Financial Modelling' can be found, providing details for this popular CIMA endorsed publication. This link can be found under the Questionaire weblink, towards the bottom of the OAK dropdown menu within Excel.

September 2005 - Version 3.3
Spreadsheet Mapping Tool - The code for this tool has been re-written in the newer C# language, resulting in a far quicker time to produce Spreadsheet or Workbook Map.
Internationalisation – Previously, an error message would appear in situations where the language and locations settings conflicted between those prescribed in Windows and those in Excel. The resulting fix eliminates such conflicts, allowing OAK to be used on any permutation of Excel and Windows settings. More information can be found within the 'Internationalisation' option, found within the OAK Options box.

July 2005 - Version 3.2
Spreadsheet Compare Tool - The code for this tool has been re-written in the newer C# language, resulting in a faster time to produce Comparison Reports. A number of other more cosmetic changes have been made, including the ability to set colours to reflect certain call difference (new cell data, deleted cell data, modified cell data) and check for upper/lower case cell data changes.
Remove Compare Modifications – As the name suggests, this tool will remove any inserted rows and colours resulting from sheet differences.
Compare Report – The comparison report will now list the cell co-ordinates for the rows OAK has inserted in order to align the spreadsheets.
Check for Updates – OAK will now check the Operis OAK website for a more recent version update and will automatically add it to the list of Excel Add-Ins.
Sundry Tools – This selection has been created to list a number of useful but lesser used tools. Whilst users will be familiar with the Version Details tool, OAK can now be used to remove colour formatting and expose hidden rows and columns.

April 2005 - Version 3.1
Summarise Workbook - The code for this tool has been re-written in the newer C# language, which results in a faster time to produce the Summary Report. Our tests have found it will work around 10x faster.

Customised Map Colours - By selecting 'Options' from the dropdown menu, you now have the ability to select your own preferred colours that will be applied whenever you use the Mapping function. Many users have commented this would be a handy feature to add.

Auto-Installer - Installation is made easier, in that the Installer program will recognise your previously registered licence number and automatically add it to your list of Excel Add-Ins.

December 2004 - Version 3.0
Formula Reconstructor – A new tool that produces a report on the make-up of a formula, by tracing its formula precedents up to a number of levels required by the user.
Formula Optimiser – This provides the ability to rewrite a formula so that redundant elements are removed, leading to the formula being easier to understand and having a greater likelihood to be correct.
De-Apply Range Names - This command allows defined range names to be removed from cell formulae and replaced by their direct cell reference. A dialog is presented listing those names in the active workbook. Multiple names can be selected from this dialog and removed from formulae in the selection.
